Free self defense classes for 2011 high school grads at Miller YMCA

(July 15, 2011) – The Miller Family YMCA of Newbury Park is offering all 2011 high school graduates free self-defense classes. Classes meet every Friday in August from noon to 2:00 p.m. No YMCA membership is required.

Mike Szydlowski is the sensei and he will teach kids how to be safe in situations that they can often find themselves in as they enter college. He will teach them precautionary measures that will keep them safe in their dorm rooms and around campus, and what to do when danger is imminent. He will also discuss how to be safe at parties and other social settings.

“Mike has been teaching self defense for years and he knows the dangers facing young people,” says Janice Wise, the Miller Y’s membership and marketing director. “The classes will give parents some peace of mind as they send their kids off to school this fall. It’s the Y’s graduation gift to our community.”

The Miller YMCA is at 320 Via Las Brisas in Newbury Park. A maximum of 30 students can enroll and advanced enrollment is required. To enroll or for more information call 805-480-0309 or email Janice Wise at jwise@millerymca.org.
