The Discovery Center’s Super Science Sunday: Math Matters! will be held on Sunday, February 27 at the Goebel Senior Adult Center, 1385 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks. The event kicks off The Discovery Center’s yearlong focus on the fun and relevance of mathematics lives.
Super Science Sunday: Math Matters!, a program designed for elementary school age children, will be offered in two sessions. The first will begin at 1 p.m. and the second at 3 p.m. Each session will begin with a live performance by Tom Wahle entitled “Structures.”
This show will explore questions such as: What is the strongest shape? How did the Romans build structures 2,000 years ago? Can you really stand on eggs? Can you build a bridge out of balloons?
After the show, families will explore how “Math Matters” through fun hands-on activities that will make even the most math shy person become a math fan.
Activities will include investigations in mapping, graphs, art, measurement, science and engineering. Assistance will be provided by trained volunteers.
Tickets are $8.00 per person and may be purchased at www.discoverycntr.org. Advanced ticket purchase is recommended to insure participation. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. For more information about Super Science Sunday, call 805- 495 6471.
Adults and high school students are invited to further explore the interesting world of mathematics on April 28th at The Discovery Center Speaker Series titled “Mathemagical Moments” when Glen Whitney, Executive Director of the Museum of Mathematics, will lead participants through a journey of “Mathemagical Moments” that promises astonishing surprises and perplexing possibilities.
In June 2011 The Discovery Center will host the West Coast Premiere of the Math Midway Travelling Exhibition that provides an interactive, hands-on tour of mathematical concepts, using a carnival style format. The individual exhibits include exciting and surprising activities that relate math principles to games and events you would find at a typical carnival, fair, or circus. The exhibit will be in the Thousand Oaks area for several weeks, providing families an opportunity for multiple visits and educational experiences. Group bookings for summer school classes, home schools, summer camp groups and playgroups will be offered. Please call The Discovery Center office at 805 879-2021 to indicate your group’s interest in-group booking opportunities. Exhibition details will be available in the spring 2011.
