Michael D. McCarty will speak at the Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Community Forum on July 10.
“Have Mouth, Will Run It,” is the self-proclaimed motto of multicultural storyteller Michael D. McCarty, who will inform, amuse and inspire at the Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Community Forum on Saturday, July 10.
McCarty is a teller of African-American and international folk tales, stories of science, spiritual narratives, and accounts of the brilliant and stupid things he has done in his life. The storyteller has traveled to many countries, among them South Africa; Zimbabwe; England; Russia; Egypt; Jamaica; China and India, and his tales reflect the diversity of the human spirit.
McCarty began telling cultural stories while in high school in the 1960s, and later entertained his daughter with tales as she grew up. He was inspired to make a career of spinning tales when he met professional storyteller Joel Ben Izzy in Los Angeles in 1992. He has performed at the John Anson Ford Plaza de la Raza, the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, the UCLA Fowler Museum, among other venues, and he was co-director of the Los Angeles World Storytelling Festival in 2002 and 2003.
Singer, songwriter and musician Merlin Snider will join the program as a special guest.
McCarty will perform at 8 p.m. July 10 in the fellowship’s sanctuary at 3327 Old Conejo Road, Newbury Park, in the Songbird Office Park. A donation of $10 is requested. For more information, call (805) 374-9818.
